Position Overview

Unitrans is on the lookout for experienced Professional Bus Drivers to operate in its Personnel Transport division, based in Tlhabane, North West. This role involves the safe and efficient transport of passengers on scheduled routes, ensuring punctual arrival at destinations. You will manage bus lighting, heating, and ventilation to keep passengers comfortable while adhering to all traffic regulations and company policies.

Job Responsibilities

As a Professional Bus Driver, your key responsibilities will include:

• Safely transporting passengers on designated routes, ensuring timely arrival at all destinations.
• Controlling the internal bus environment, including lighting, heating, and ventilation to provide comfort for passengers.
• Adhering to traffic rules, speed limits, and prescribed road signals to ensure safety.
• Practicing defensive driving techniques, focusing on accident prevention and ensuring the safety of passengers and other road users.
• Monitoring the bus for any malfunctions or deviations from operational standards, inspecting the vehicle before and after each trip.
• Reporting any defects, incidents, or near misses to supervisors immediately, even if you weren’t directly involved.
• Completing and maintaining detailed logbooks, recording hours and all relevant incidents during trips.
• Participating in Driver Safety Sessions (DSS) and ongoing training to stay up to date with company and regulatory standards.
• Maintaining a clean and refueled vehicle at all times.
• Ensuring all passenger check-ins are accurately registered before trips.

Additional Duties

• Follow Unitrans’ Passenger rules, regulations, and company code of conduct.
• Respect customer guidelines and service standards, including SMS policies.
• Follow specific vehicle guidelines, including the mandatory use of seat belts for both the driver and passengers.
• Park safely, applying wheel chocks when required, and removing keys from the ignition when the vehicle is stationary.
• Collaborate with team members to maintain an organized work environment.
• Assist in ensuring the proper upkeep of the vehicle and report any damages or required repairs to supervisors.
• Complete all required documentation related to incidents, accidents, and vehicle condition.
• Ensure compliance with scheduled bus collection times and route stops as outlined in the job card.
• Only perform overtaking maneuvers when absolutely necessary and authorized, such as in cases of mechanical breakdowns of other Unitrans vehicles.

Key Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, the candidate must meet the following requirements:

Education:

• Matric (Grade 12) or equivalent National Certificate.

Licenses & Certifications:

• Public Services Driving License (PrDP).
• Valid driver’s license categories: CE – G, CE – PG, and C – G.

Experience:

• A minimum of 5 years of bus driving experience, with a proven track record in passenger transport.

Skills:

• Mastery of defensive driving and preventive techniques.
• Strong attention to detail, with the ability to adhere to company policies and procedures.
• Excellent communication skills, with a customer-first attitude.
• A high level of punctuality and reliability in following schedules and completing trips safely.
• Ability to follow detailed written instructions and procedures related to daily activities.
• Good organizational skills, maintaining proper vehicle checklists and timely reporting.
• Physical stamina and ability to handle long driving hours while ensuring safety and alertness.
