Job Overview

As a Petroleum Tanker Driver, you will be responsible for operating ultra-heavy-duty vehicles with a gross vehicle mass or combination mass exceeding 25,000kg. Your primary duty will be transporting petroleum products from the distribution center to customers safely and efficiently. This role demands a high level of responsibility, particularly when it comes to vehicle safety, roadworthiness, and compliance with strict regulations in handling dangerous goods.

You will also be tasked with ensuring that all goods are accounted for, maintaining a professional attitude towards customers, and adhering to company policies and road safety regulations.

Your contribution as a Petroleum Tanker Driver is critical to Unitrans’ operation. In this role, your expertise in handling petroleum products and driving ultra-heavy-duty vehicles will ensure the safe and efficient delivery of goods. You will be trusted with the responsibility of handling valuable, and often hazardous, materials, making your role vital for maintaining customer satisfaction and operational success.

The company relies on your driving skills and knowledge of transportation laws to avoid accidents and ensure the highest levels of safety for both you and the public.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

To be eligible for this role, you must meet the following minimum qualifications and experience:

  • Grade 12 / Matric (NQF Level 4) or equivalent qualification.
  • Alternatively, Grade 10 / NQF Level 2 may be considered for candidates with substantial driving experience.
  • A valid Code EC driver’s license.
  • PrDP – D (Professional Driving Permit for Dangerous Goods) if required to operate a Dangerous Goods (DG) vehicle.
  • A minimum of 3 years’ experience as a petroleum tanker driver.
  • A clean driving record with no serious traffic violations.
  • A clean criminal record is required for the role, considering the nature of the goods being transported.

Key Responsibilities and Duties

As a Petroleum Tanker Driver, your role will involve a variety of tasks aimed at ensuring the safe and efficient delivery of petroleum products. Below are the primary responsibilities you will be expected to undertake:

1. Vehicle Preparation and Inspection

Before embarking on any trip, you will be required to:

  • Prepare the vehicle for the journey by conducting thorough pre-trip inspections. This includes checking for mechanical issues, fluid levels, and ensuring the overall roadworthiness of the vehicle.
  • Perform post-trip inspections to ensure the vehicle is in good condition after completing the delivery.

2. Safe Operation of Ultra-Heavy-Duty Vehicles

As the operator of a tanker carrying hazardous materials, you will need to:

  • Handle the ultra-heavy-duty vehicle with care, following all safety protocols and road regulations to ensure a safe journey.
  • Ensure that the vehicle’s gross combination mass exceeds 25,000kg, and that you are adhering to weight regulations for optimal safety.
  • Follow all road traffic laws, including speed limits, and drive defensively to prevent accidents.

3. Handling Documentation

You will be responsible for managing important trip-related documentation, including:

  • Handling dispatch documents and ensuring accurate completion of all delivery-related paperwork.
  • Ensuring all documentation is returned to the distribution center upon completion of deliveries.

4. Ensuring Vehicle Roadworthiness

As a Petroleum Tanker Driver, it is critical that you take full responsibility for the vehicle’s condition. You must:

  • Ensure that the roadworthiness of the vehicle is maintained before departing from the depot.
  • Immediately report any defects or malfunctions to your supervisor and take necessary actions before proceeding with the trip.

5. Accountability for Goods

You will be responsible for the load you transport. This includes:

  • Ensuring that all petroleum products being transported are accounted for and securely loaded.
  • Safeguarding the load and ensuring there are no discrepancies between dispatch and delivery.

6. Following Instructions and Adapting to Work Schedules

This role demands flexibility, and you should be prepared to:

  • Follow any reasonable instructions provided by your supervisor, particularly in situations requiring changes to the delivery route or schedule.
  • Be ready to work shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as required by the demands of the business.
