Job Description

Are you looking to join a leading organisation in Southern Africa’s glass distribution industry? PG Building Glass, a renowned division of the PG Group, is currently seeking a Truck Assistant in Empangeni, South Africa. As part of PG Group, which prides itself on quality and innovative glass solutions, this role offers the chance to be hands-on in delivering products that keep out intruders, sound, and heat, while also offering a range of decorative glass finishes. If you’re motivated, energetic, and up for the challenge, this might be the perfect position for you!

Job Title: Truck Assistant

Location: Empangeni, South Africa
Company: PG Building Glass, PG Group

Main Purpose of the Role

As a Truck Assistant, your primary responsibility is to support the driver in the safe and efficient loading, unloading, and delivery of glass products to customers. This involves ensuring that glass products are securely loaded and safely transported, following all safety and handling guidelines. Working closely with the driver, you will also assist in manoeuvring the vehicle in tight or confined spaces, making this a key role for ensuring smooth, safe deliveries.

Core Objectives and Responsibilities

  • Loading and Offloading: Identify the safest, most suitable spots for loading and offloading glass products. Ensure that the loading surface is as level as possible to maintain product integrity and prevent accidents.
  • Safety and Quality Assurance: Conduct quality checks during loading, using a quality check sheet to document the state of the products. Constantly double-check that the load is secure before the vehicle leaves a customer site, and make adjustments as needed during the journey.
  • Vehicle Assistance: Help the driver navigate in confined or restricted spaces, especially when reversing, to avoid any accidents or damage. This is especially important when delivering in high-traffic or difficult-to-access areas.
  • Paperwork and Documentation: Support the driver in managing delivery paperwork, ensuring that all documents are completed accurately and efficiently.
  • Compliance: Follow all workplace instructions, standard operating procedures, and business rules strictly. Adhere to PG Group’s environmental, safety, and housekeeping standards to maintain a clean and hazard-free environment.
  • Additional Duties: Undertake any other tasks assigned by the factory supervisor. Flexibility is key, as this position requires a readiness to perform various duties and work overtime or weekends when needed.

Critical Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Education: A Matric (Grade 12) certificate is essential.
  • Driving License: A Code 10 or higher driver’s license with a valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP) would be an advantage, although not mandatory.

Experience

  • Dangerous Goods Handling: Previous experience handling and moving dangerous goods is advantageous, given the specialised nature of glass products.
  • Glass Handling: Experience in loading, unloading, and quality control of glass products is preferred. Familiarity with various types of glass, including fragile and heavy items, will be beneficial.

Skills and Competencies

  • Communication Skills: Strong communication skills are essential, as you will frequently interact with the driver, customers, and the team to ensure smooth operations.
  • Interpersonal Skills: You should be approachable and professional, as you’ll represent the company during deliveries. Effective customer interaction is a must to uphold PG Group’s standards.
  • Analytical and Numerical Abilities: Demonstrated skill in analysing data and completing numerical tasks accurately. This is especially important for recording product quantities, handling documentation, and ensuring accurate deliveries.

Personal Attributes

  • Self-Motivation: As an independent worker, you should be a self-starter who takes initiative to complete tasks without needing constant supervision.
  • High Energy and Adaptability: The fast-paced nature of this role requires high energy and the ability to adapt quickly to different delivery locations and scenarios. You should be able to handle multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure.
  • Attention to Detail: Given the fragile nature of glass products, careful attention to quality and detail is critical to prevent damage and ensure safe deliveries.
  • Mobility: Reliable transport to work and the ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, is essential for this role.
