What the Role Entails
As a Heavy Vehicle Driver, your primary responsibility will be the safe, efficient, and correct operation, use, and maintenance of agricultural or horticultural-related road and plant equipment. You will ensure the proper balancing, transportation, and handling of goods and materials, as well as contribute to the overall success of the EMS team by assisting with various driving and equipment-related tasks.
Minimum Requirements
To qualify for this role, you must meet the following requirements:
- Education:
- Grade 12 (National Senior Certificate).
- Licenses and Certifications:
- A valid Code EC driver’s license with the ability to pass Rand Water’s K53 driving test.
- A valid Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
- Experience:
- At least 2 years of driving experience.
- Previous experience operating a backhoe loader (TLB) will be an added advantage.
Your Key Responsibilities
As a Heavy Vehicle Driver at Rand Water, your duties will include:
Vehicle Operations and Safety:
- Ensuring the vehicle is roadworthy before operation.
- Performing regular checks to confirm the load is secure, balanced, and complies with legal requirements (e.g., height, length, and width restrictions).
- Inspecting and operating tie-downs and lifting equipment effectively.
- Reporting any vehicle defects and ensuring vehicles are cleaned and maintained.
Load Management:
- Accurately balancing and positioning materials loaded onto vehicles.
- Verifying documentation against the load for accuracy.
- Dumping materials at authorised sites only.
Team Support and Relief Duties:
- Assisting with tree felling operations as required.
- Operating truck-mounted cranes and slings.
- Providing relief for other drivers within the EMS team.
- Performing additional driving duties when necessary.
Compliance and Reporting:
- Filling in the logbook and maintaining accurate records of activities.
- Ensuring the welfare and safety of your crew while on the road.
- Adhering to all equipment compliance standards and regulatory guidelines.

- Strong understanding of safe working procedures in heavy vehicle operations.
- Proficiency in job planning and ensuring compliance with logistical requirements.

- Experience with truck-mounted cranes and tipper trucks.
- Efficient operation of equipment and tools related to vehicle and load management.
