Purpose of the Job:
As a Driver Training Academy (DTA) Instructor/Assessor, you will take full responsibility for all assessments and the associated administrative duties. Your primary role is to coach both new and existing drivers, evaluating their competency and ensuring they meet the required standards.


Key Responsibilities:

Driver Evaluation and Training:

  • Conduct thorough evaluations of both new and existing drivers to ensure they meet the company’s standards.
  • Facilitate annual driver assessments and soft skills training as per the training schedule.
  • Prepare all necessary documentation before and after training sessions, ensuring it is complete and accurate.
  • Record all evaluations on the SHEQx system, ensuring daily updates with correct information.
  • Report the number of drivers evaluated to the business and provide detailed feedback on their performance.
  • Ensure all training documents are signed off by both the candidate and the assessor.

Forklift Training and Assessment:

  • Deliver novice and refresher training for forklift operators, ensuring active participation in theoretical sessions.
  • Conduct practical assessments using forklifts to determine operator competency.
  • Comply with the quality management system, ensuring training documents are completed without errors.
  • Complete outcome-based assessments on the portfolio of evidence within five days post-training, sharing results with candidates and the DTA Admin Supervisor.
  • Ensure all required documents, including certified ID copies, proof of medical fitness, and CVs, are available before conducting training.
  • Continuously update licenses and records on the SHEQx system.

Training on Operate a Crane, Lift Trucks, and Convey Dangerous Goods:

  • Provide training and refresher courses for operators on equipment such as truck-mounted cranes, reach trucks, powered pallet trucks, and rigid vehicles.
  • Ensure class participation and create a conducive learning environment during theoretical training.
  • Conduct practical assessments to evaluate operator competency with lifting equipment.
  • Complete outcome-based assessments on the portfolio of evidence within five days and ensure all documentation is accurately captured and shared with the Admin Supervisor.
  • Maintain compliance with the quality management system, ensuring all documents are properly completed and filed.

Administration of Certificates and Licenses:

  • Verify the accuracy of employee details on certificates and licenses before handing them over to the DTA Admin Supervisor.
  • Communicate with the DTA Technical Manager regarding non-competent employees, providing advice on retraining and reassessment.
  • Ensure that all copies of certificates and licenses are attached to the employee’s assessment records.

Assessment and Moderation:

  • Conduct outcome-based assessments within the scope of DTA accreditation, maintaining responsibility for your Assessor registration.
  • Compile assessment reports post-evaluation and ensure learner information sheets are completed and signed before assessments begin.
  • Create a moderation plan and conduct outcome-based moderation for assessments, ensuring 50% to 80% of portfolios of evidence (POEs) are moderated within three months.
  • Provide constructive feedback to assessors to improve the quality of POE assessments.
  • Conduct pre- and post-moderation meetings to ensure continuous improvement.

General Tasks:

  • Assist with planning for onsite audits and handle TETA-related administrative tasks.
  • Support the business during peak times by providing urgent training or evaluations as needed.
  • Ensure proper housekeeping in your work area and report any damaged assets to the DTA Administrative Supervisor.
  • Travel to other regions for training, with the approval of the DTA Technical Manager, and maintain full responsibility for company vehicles during these trips.
  • Adhere to all company policies, including PPE requirements, and complete logbooks for vehicle use.

Minimum Requirements:

  • Education: Grade 12 (Matric)
  • Certifications:
    • Assessor Certificate
    • Moderator Certificate
    • Train the Trainer Certificate
  • Experience: At least 5 years of experience in facilitation and assessment.

Skills Required:

  • Strong communication and facilitation skills.
  • Excellent driving skills.
  • Ability to manage workload independently with minimal supervision.
  • Deadline-driven with a proactive attitude.
  • Willingness to explore new methods of work and contribute to new projects.

Knowledge and Personal Attributes:

  • In-depth knowledge of the SAQA framework, Skills Development Act, and Driven Machinery regulations.
  • Experience with a blended learning approach.
  • Proficiency in verbal and written business English.
  • Ability to provide constructive feedback and continuously improve assessment processes.
