Job Overview

We are seeking a highly capable and motivated Fleet Manager to join our Milling Replenishment Department at the Premier Meadowview Depot in Midrand. This role is crucial in ensuring our fleet of trucks is roadworthy, compliant with South African transport legislation, and operating efficiently. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing fleet maintenance, overseeing a team, and driving operational efficiency to meet delivery schedules.


Key Responsibilities

1. Fleet Management

  • Oversee the maintenance, roadworthiness, and cleanliness of Code 14 trucks.
  • Conduct regular inspections of the fleet to prevent breakdowns and enhance delivery reliability.
  • Schedule and monitor preventative maintenance to ensure all vehicles remain in optimal condition.
  • Ensure that vehicles have up-to-date Certification of Fitness and are always ready for the road.

2. Compliance and Safety

  • Ensure that all fleet activities comply with AARTO regulations, FSSC 22000 standards, and other relevant health and safety protocols.
  • Conduct regular safety audits and inspections to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Lead investigations for accidents or incidents involving the fleet and document findings to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
  • Stay updated with all legal requirements to minimise risks and ensure compliance.

3. Cost Management

  • Monitor and track fleet-related expenses, ensuring cost-effective operations.
  • Identify areas where operational inefficiencies can be reduced to minimise costs.
  • Implement strategies to lower the cost-per-kilometer for vehicles without compromising safety or efficiency.

4. Team Management

  • Recruit, train, and manage a high-performing transport team, enhancing morale and productivity.
  • Supervise and evaluate team members, offering feedback to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Foster a positive work environment and promote a culture of excellence and safety within the team.

5. Operational Efficiency

  • Ensure that all deliveries are timely and efficient by maintaining a well-functioning fleet.
  • Work closely with the loading and delivery teams to optimise schedules and reduce delays.
  • Ensure that trucks are clean, presentable, and well-maintained to uphold the company’s reputation for reliable service.

6. Risk Management

  • Proactively manage risks associated with vehicle breakdowns and accidents.
  • Conduct thorough investigations following incidents, addressing any potential liability issues.
  • Implement strategies to mitigate risks and protect company assets.

Qualification Requirements

  • Matric (Essential)
  • Qualified Diesel Mechanic (Desirable)
  • Diploma in Logistics or related field (Desirable)

Experience Requirements

  • 3-5 years experience in a transport controller or fleet manager role.
  • 3-5 years of supervisory experience managing a transport or logistics team.

Key Skills and Outputs

  • Advanced knowledge of fleet maintenance: Understand the requirements for vehicle upkeep, preventive maintenance schedules, and compliance standards.
  • Cost Control: Intermediate skills in managing fleet expenses, supplier relationships, and cost-saving initiatives.
  • Health and Safety: In-depth understanding of safety regulations to ensure a safe and compliant work environment.
  • Technology Proficiency: Strong MS Office skills and experience with fleet management software, including Great Plains, DRM, or OTI systems.
  • Leadership and Team Development: Ability to lead and grow a transport team, conducting performance reviews and driving team success.
