Job Overview

As an Ultra-Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver, your primary role will involve transporting and distributing goods to various clients. Ensuring the safe and efficient operation of ultra-heavy vehicles will be your responsibility, including vehicle inspections, load management, and adherence to safety protocols.

 

This is a role for someone who has strong experience in heavy-duty vehicle operations, understands the importance of vehicle inspections, and knows how to handle large loads in a variety of conditions. You will also need to handle customer relations professionally, ensuring the seamless delivery of goods across different locations.

 

Minimum Requirements

To qualify for this role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

 

  • Grade 12 / Senior Certificate: Basic education is necessary, with literacy in both verbal and numerical comprehension.

 

  • Code EC Driver’s License: A valid Code 14 driver’s license is a must, along with a valid PrDP (DGP).

 

  • Experience: You’ll need at least 3 years of experience driving ultra-heavy vehicles, including experience with vehicle loading and offloading.

 

  • Age: Candidates must be 25 years of age or older to apply.

 

  • Availability: Be prepared to work weekends and public holidays as needed.

 

  • Defensive Driving: Having knowledge of defensive driving techniques is essential to ensure safety while on the road.

 

  • Mechanical Knowledge: You should have a solid understanding of the function and location of vehicle components and be able to identify potential defects.

 

  • Fire Safety: You must be competent in operating a fire extinguisher and handling vehicle emergencies.

 

  • Loading Techniques: Familiarity with vehicle loading techniques and maximizing cost-effectiveness will be crucial for this role.

Responsibilities and Duties

In this role, you will take on a variety of duties aimed at ensuring efficient and safe goods transportation. Below are some key responsibilities:

 

1. Vehicle Preparation and Operation

Before setting out on a trip, you’ll be responsible for preparing the vehicle. This includes:

  • Conducting pre-trip vehicle inspections to ensure everything is in order.
  • Operating ultra-heavy vehicles in line with company standards and road regulations.
  • Ensuring that the vehicle is not overloaded in compliance with the National Road Traffic Act.

2. Loading, Transporting, and Offloading

As a Code 14 driver, you’ll:

  • Load goods onto the vehicle using appropriate loading techniques to prevent damage and ensure safety.
  • Transport goods safely, adhering to the routes and schedules provided by your supervisor.
  • Oversee or actively participate in the offloading process, depending on the type of load. For certain goods, you may need to open and close tarpaulins or operate offloading equipment.

3. Documentation and Ancillary Duties

Documentation is an important part of the job. You’ll need to:

  • Handle and submit all necessary paperwork associated with the transportation of goods, such as trip logs and delivery confirmations.
  • Ensure that all documentation is completed accurately and on time.

4. Shift and Weekend Work

The nature of the job requires flexibility. You must be:

Prepared to work shifts: This includes night shifts, weekends, and public holidays as required by the job schedule.

5. Safety and Housekeeping

Safety is a top priority, and you will be expected to:

  • Maintain a clean driving record.
  • Ensure the vehicle and its equipment are always in top condition through regular inspections.
  • Wear the appropriate PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) and ensure that your uniform is in line with company standards.
  • Adhere to and promote the company’s SOPs (Standard Operating Procedures) and safety protocols at all times.

6. Customer Interaction

Part of your duties will include interacting with clients at the delivery sites. You’ll need to:

Address any client concerns or questions about the delivery, ensuring a positive customer experience.

7. Medical and Training Requirements

As part of the onboarding process, you will need to complete:

  • A medical evaluation to confirm you are physically fit for the role.
  • USCS training modules related to ultra-heavy vehicle driving and handling.
  • A practical driving evaluation to verify your on-road skills.
  • Verification of your clean criminal record.
