Job Purpose:
This exciting opportunity invites skilled and experienced individuals to join our growing team as bus drivers. The main objective of this position is to safely and efficiently transport passengers and commuters using the City’s public transport infrastructure. As a bus driver, you will be tasked with operating city buses on scheduled routes while adhering to strict safety and traffic regulations. This role is crucial in ensuring the smooth flow of daily public transportation while providing excellent customer service to passengers. Estimated Remuneration Package:

• Salary Scale: R239,052.00 – R332,016.00 per annum
• Total Package: R336,203.00 – R454,528.00 per annum

Application Requirements:
To qualify for the Bus Driver position, applicants must meet specific criteria to ensure they are equipped to handle the demands of the role. Applicants must provide documentation demonstrating their qualifications, experience, and fitness to perform the duties required of a bus driver.

• Minimum education level: Grade 10
  While Grade 12 is not a requirement, a basic education level ensures drivers have the necessary literacy and numeracy skills to complete important tasks such as filling out reports, maintaining logs, and managing route schedules.
• Relevant experience in driving heavy vehicles
  Applicants should have hands-on experience driving heavy vehicles, particularly buses or large trucks. This experience ensures drivers can handle the complexities of maneuvering large vehicles in city traffic and are familiar with the unique challenges of transporting passengers.
• Valid Code C, EC1 (04), EC, or C1 (04) driving license
  The appropriate driving licenses are required for operating large, heavy-duty vehicles. Applicants must possess a valid license to demonstrate their competence in operating vehicles used in public transportation.
• Valid PrDP (Professional Driving Permit)
  This is a critical requirement, as a PrDP is necessary for anyone driving for commercial purposes, particularly when transporting passengers. It ensures that drivers have undergone the necessary tests and background checks to qualify for transporting passengers safely and responsibly.
• Must have a clean criminal record
  A clean criminal record is essential to ensure that all drivers adhere to the highest standards of safety and trustworthiness, especially when interacting with the public.
• Physically fit and in good health
  Driving long hours and managing a large vehicle can be physically demanding. Candidates must be physically fit and undergo a medical check to ensure they are healthy enough to meet the job’s demands. This includes the ability to sit for extended periods, manage stress, and react quickly in emergency situations.
• Willingness and ability to work shifts and overtime
  The public transport sector operates beyond the standard 9-to-5 working hours. Drivers must be flexible and available to work shifts, including early mornings, late evenings, weekends, and public holidays, to ensure continuous transport services.

Key Responsibilities:
The bus driver’s role is not simply about driving from one point to another. It involves a range of responsibilities that ensure the safety, comfort, and satisfaction of passengers, as well as the smooth operation of the transport system.

• Transport passengers safely
  Bus drivers must prioritize safety at all times. This involves adhering to speed limits, adjusting driving according to weather conditions, and ensuring that the vehicle is in good working condition. Drivers are responsible for ensuring that passengers board and disembark safely and that they follow proper procedures in case of emergencies.
• Operate the Automated Fare Collection (AFC) system
  One of the critical functions of the bus driver is to manage the AFC system. This technology allows passengers to tap in and out of the bus using electronic cards. Drivers must ensure that the system is operational, and they must monitor passenger compliance to ensure that all fares are collected appropriately.
• Adhere to designated routes and schedules
  Bus drivers must follow specific routes set by the city’s transport department, ensuring that they stick to the schedule as closely as possible. Punctuality is essential for ensuring that passengers can rely on public transport to reach their destinations on time.
• Perform vehicle inspections
  Before each trip, drivers are responsible for conducting routine vehicle inspections to ensure that the bus is roadworthy. This includes checking the tires, engine, lights, and safety features such as seat belts and emergency exits. Drivers must also report any defects or issues with the bus immediately to ensure repairs are made.
• Comply with traffic laws
  Bus drivers must adhere to all traffic laws, including those set out by the National Road Traffic Act, 1996 (Act 93 of 1996). This includes obeying speed limits, following traffic signals, and ensuring that all safety procedures are followed.
• Handle special duties
  Drivers may occasionally be assigned special duties, such as operating buses for special events, emergencies, or charter services. In these cases, drivers must be flexible and adaptable to new routes and passenger requirements.
• Maintain a clean and well-kept vehicle
  Drivers are responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of their buses. This involves performing basic housekeeping tasks such as ensuring that the bus is free of debris and that all safety equipment is in working order. A clean bus not only enhances the passenger experience but also reflects positively on the city’s transport service.
