Key Responsibilities
As a Heavy Vehicle Driver at Rand Water, your responsibilities will go beyond transportation. You will be the backbone of our transport operations, ensuring that equipment and goods are delivered safely, efficiently, and in a timely manner. Here’s what your role will entail:
- Driving and Operating Heavy Vehicles
- Safely operate and drive rigid and articulated heavy vehicles to transport essential plant equipment, goods, and occasionally Rand Water staff.
- Adhere strictly to road safety regulations and company policies, ensuring that you drive responsibly, particularly when handling extra heavy vehicles (horse and trailer).
- Be prepared to navigate challenging routes and drive under various conditions, adapting as needed to complete deliveries efficiently and safely.
- Loading, Securing, and Transporting Goods
- Carefully load and secure equipment and goods in compliance with load safety standards.
- Apply knowledge of tie-down equipment to ensure all loads are stable and safe for transport, minimising the risk of damage or loss.
- Conduct checks to ensure that goods are securely fastened before departure and confirm that load weights align with vehicle capacity and road regulations.
- Vehicle Inspection and Maintenance
- Perform regular inspections of the vehicle, checking for any potential issues or required maintenance.
- Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections, ensuring that the vehicle is in optimal working condition and reporting any issues to the maintenance team.
- Keep vehicles clean and well-maintained, contributing to the professional image of Rand Water and ensuring that vehicles are ready for operation at all times.
- Customer Service and Communication
- Uphold Rand Water’s commitment to customer service by ensuring that all interactions are courteous and professional.
- Communicate effectively with team members, logistics staff, and supervisors to report delays, coordinate pickups, and provide updates as required.

- Documentation and Reporting
- Complete all necessary documentation accurately, including delivery notes, maintenance logs, and safety checklists.
- Report any incidents, accidents, or equipment issues promptly, ensuring that safety protocols are followed at all times.
- Maintain organised records of each trip and delivery, ensuring accountability and transparency in all your duties.
Minimum Requirements
To be considered for the Heavy Vehicle Driver position at Rand Water, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Educational Qualification: Grade 12 or equivalent.
- Licensing: Possess a valid EC (Code 14) driver’s license with a Professional Driving Permit (PrDP), allowing you to operate extra heavy vehicles.
- Experience: A minimum of 1 year of experience in driving heavy vehicles, particularly horse and trailer combinations.
