Key Requirements for the Role

Curro is looking for a candidate with the following experience, skills, and qualifications:

  • Educational Requirement: Matric (Grade 12).
  • Licensing: Valid Code 10 Driver’s License with a Professional Driving Permit (PDP).
  • Experience: At least 5 years of driving experience in a similar role, preferably within a school or educational institution.
  • Communication Skills: Presentable and able to communicate effectively with students, staff, and parents.
  • Safety Compliance: Clear criminal record.

Responsibilities

1. Learner Transportation

The primary responsibility of the Bus Driver will be to transport students safely and responsibly to and from school, on time and in adherence to set routes.

  • Daily Route Management: Operate the school bus along prescribed routes, picking up and dropping off students at designated stops.
  • Field Trip Support: Transport students and teachers for field trips or special events, planning routes and stops to accommodate each destination.
  • Student Supervision: Maintain order on the bus, ensuring students are seated and behaving appropriately throughout the trip.
  • Safety Protocols: Implement district policies on student discipline and safety, ensuring a calm and safe atmosphere while in transit.

2. General Worker Duties

In addition to driving, this role requires providing general support across the school’s facilities to ensure they are in optimal working condition.

  • Facilities and Maintenance Support:
    • Receive and prioritize requests for maintenance work across the school.
    • Conduct daily inspections to identify any repair needs within the facilities.
    • Perform minor repairs, such as plumbing, electrical, and general maintenance tasks.
    • Inform the facilities manager of any additional repair requirements and assist with maintenance across the campus.
  • Tools and Equipment Management:
    • Keep tools well-organized, secure, and readily available for all maintenance activities.
    • Check stock of maintenance materials and notify the facilities manager when supplies are low.
  • Security and Access Control:
    • Assist in managing access control across the school grounds and provide support in overseeing campus traffic flow for student and staff safety.
  • Garden Maintenance:
    • Maintain outdoor areas, including grass, flower beds, and other landscaping elements.
    • Ensure garden tools are well-maintained and organized, reporting consumable needs to the facilities manager.

3. Health and Safety

As a bus driver and general worker, you’ll play a key role in maintaining a safe and clean school environment.

  • Daily Vehicle Inspections: Conduct a thorough safety inspection of the assigned bus before each shift, including checks on brakes, lights, and tires.
  • Vehicle Upkeep: Replenish fuel, oil, and other fluids as needed, and report any required repairs to the transportation manager.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Participate in regular safety drills, ensuring readiness in case of an emergency.
  • Bus Cleanliness: Maintain a clean and hygienic environment within the bus, regularly cleaning and sanitizing all surfaces.
  • Safety Meetings: Attend safety and first aid training sessions to stay informed of best practices and requirements for student safety and emergency response.

4. Record Keeping

Maintaining accurate and up-to-date records is an essential part of this role.

  • Mileage Reports: Track and document periodic mileage, fuel usage, and other essential data for each shift.
  • Passenger Counts: Complete and submit records on passenger numbers as per school and regulatory requirements.
