Job Overview
BME, a division of the Omnia Group and a global leader in blasting solutions, is looking for an experienced Operator (Explosives Truck) to join its team in Newcastle, KwaZulu-Natal. The successful candidate will be responsible for operating a mixer-placer truck to safely load blast holes with explosive products while ensuring full compliance with SHERQ standards, operational procedures, and mining regulations.
This opportunity is ideal for experienced Code 14 (EC) drivers with dangerous goods experience who are looking to build a career in the mining industry.
Key Responsibilities
Explosives Truck Operations
- Operate a mixer-placer truck to load blast holes with explosive products.
- Receive charging instructions from the Blaster.
- Inspect blast holes, measure depths, and verify compliance with blasting specifications.
- Report out-of-spec holes to the Blaster before charging begins.
- Calculate the correct quantity of explosive product required for each blast hole.
- Inspect pumps, equipment, and operational settings before commencing loading.
- Analyse product samples to verify density and quality before charging.
- Load blast holes according to approved blast designs and company procedures.
- Ensure the correct blast holes are charged according to customer specifications.
Safety, SHERQ & Compliance
- Comply with all Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality (SHERQ) requirements.
- Follow dangerous goods transport and explosives handling procedures.
- Report equipment faults, operational deviations, and safety concerns immediately.
- Participate in preventative maintenance and equipment inspections.
Administration
- Complete loading sheets, pre-use inspection checklists, and operational reports accurately.
- Record truck performance, calibrations, lubrication schedules, and maintenance activities.
- Maintain accurate operational documentation.
Team Support
- Supervise the Truck Assistant during daily operations.
- Work closely with the Blaster, Foreman, and operational teams to ensure safe and efficient blasting activities.
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 with Mathematics.
- Valid Code EC (Code 14) driver’s licence.
- Valid Dangerous Goods Permit (DGP).
- Minimum 5 years’ experience driving heavy-duty vehicles.
- Minimum 3 years’ truck driving experience, preferably within a mining environment.
