Job Overview

Unitrans is seeking a suitably qualified and experienced Extra Heavy Motor Vehicle Driver (Articulated) to prepare vehicles for trips and operate heavy-duty vehicles safely and efficiently.

The successful candidate will be responsible for transporting goods to customers, managing delivery documentation, conducting vehicle inspections and ensuring that all loads are accounted for. Applicants must have experience driving articulated vehicles and rigid trucks, a strong commitment to road safety and the ability to work shifts, weekends and public holidays.

Minimum Requirements

• Grade 12 literacy level.
• Valid Code 14 driver’s licence.
• Valid Professional Driving Permit (PrDP) for the applicable vehicle category.
• Minimum of 3 years’ articulated driving experience, including experience driving both rigid trucks and horse-and-trailer combinations.
• Medically fit for the role.
• Clean criminal record and a safe driving history.
• Knowledge and experience in the following areas:
  • Defensive driving techniques.
  • Operating vehicles with Eaton Fuller and ZF gearboxes.
  • Identifying vehicle components and understanding their functions and locations.
  • Road Traffic Act requirements applicable to vehicle operation.
  • Adapting driving practices to weather, road and traffic conditions.
  • Emergency and vehicle defect reporting procedures.
  • Vehicle inspections and the correct use of fire extinguishers.
  • Improving vehicle cost-effectiveness and operational efficiency.
  • Safe and effective vehicle loading techniques.

Duties and Responsibilities

• Prepare heavy-duty vehicles for trips and ensure they are ready for operation.
• Operate articulated trucks safely and efficiently.
• Complete and manage delivery documentation from dispatch to the customer and back to the distribution centre.
• Conduct pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections.
• Account for all goods transported and delivered to customers.
• Ensure that deliveries are handled in accordance with operational procedures and customer requirements.
• Report vehicle defects, emergencies and other incidents according to company procedures.
• Comply with road traffic legislation, company safety standards and defensive driving practices.

• Follow reasonable instructions issued by the supervisor.
• Work shifts, weekends and public holidays as required.
• Maintain a safe driving record and comply with company policies.
